The San Jose City Hall peregrine falcon chicks have learned to fly, according to Glenn Stewart, Director of the University of California at Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group.
Cobalt, Horacio, Thunder, and Hope, in that order, all found their way out of the nest and into the air for the first time last week, passing a significant milestone in their lives, Stewart said.
"Fledging is a difficult time for any bird," Stewart said, adding that birds in urban areas run the risk of flying into glass windows.
The falcons will remain around their City Hall nest with mother Clara and father Fernando el Cohete until they are capable enough at catching food to leave and establish their own nests, Stewart said.
After leaving, the four young falcons will no longer be allowed back in the nest, Stewart said. "It's not like going home after college," he said, since parent falcons defend their nests from their own grown offspring just as they would from any other falcon.
"It's an enormous burden for the adults to bring food for themselves and their babies -- they can't do it indefinitely," Stewart said.
But for now, there's still time to catch a glimpse of the whole falcon family in the air around City Hall, Stewart said.

A Fremont woman was found dead early Wednesday inside a car filled with poisonous gas parked underneath her apartment complex, authorities said.
Authorities got a 911 call at 1:30 a.m. from the woman’s husband telling them he had found her in her car in the underground parking lot. He said there was a sign on the vehicle’s window reading ‘Poisonous Gas’.
Police said the woman apparently died of exposure to hydrogen sulfide fumes. Residents of the apartment complex were warned to shelter in place in their homes.
Investigators were on the scene to determine if the woman’s death was a suicide.

Firefighters battling an early morning blaze Wednesday that lit up an East Oakland neighborhood, sending residents scrambling from their homes, were forced to let one building burn to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring structures. Freddie Barahona told KTVU he ran from his neighboring home when he saw the flames lighting up the pre-dawn sky.
“I was just concerned that our house was on fire,” he said. “I looked out the window and wasn’t sure if it was the morning mist or smoke.”
Oakland fire said it received a 911 call reporting the blaze at about 4:45 a.m. near the corner of 28th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Arriving firefighters found on home completely engulfed in flames. Within minutes, the crews took of a defensive position, dumping water onto the burning in an effort to stop it from spreading in the densely populated neighborhood.
Paul Rickett, who also rushed out of his neighboring home, said the building that caught fire was abandoned but he thought squatters may have been staying there.
“I know there is a bunch of homeless people who live in that house,” he told KTVU. “They come in from the back – the front is all boarded up. It’s abandoned but there are people who come and go. “
Fire officials said they believed anyone who was in the house at the time of the fire had escaped before they arrived.
The fire apparently began at the rear of the building, fire officials said, and the damage was confined to just one structure.
