Driver arrested after running red light, slamming into OPD patrol car

An alleged drunk driver slammed into an Oakland police patrol car early Monday morning after running a red light, a police officer said.

The collision occurred just after midnight in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where a car crashed into a patrol car with two officers inside, Officer Kevin McDonald said.

The drunk driver fled after colliding with the patrol car, but the officers caught up with the driver and arrested him on suspicion of DUI,

McDonald said. The driver's name was not immediately released by police that morning.

One of the officers complained of pain following the crash, which also caused moderate to major damage to the patrol vehicle, McDonald said.

Chase leads to second fatal Vallejo officer-involved shooting in a week

A police pursuit of a speeding car resulted in a fatal officer-involved shooting Monday morning, the second fatal shooting by a Vallejo police officer in a week.

According to the Vallejo Police Department, two officers on DUI patrol reported seeing a white Lexus driving without headlights on, speeding and blowing through stop signs just after midnight Monday.

The officers began pursuit of the vehicle, following it into the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 200 block of Wilson Ave. where the driver and two passengers fled the vehicle in different directions.

One officer confronted the driver within the apartment complex with weapon drawn. The driver reportedly ignored the officer’s orders to stop and put his hands in the air; instead the suspect ran at the officer with his hands in the waistband area of his jacket.

At one point, the driver reached into his pocket and pulled out a dark metal object, which the officer believed was a weapon.

“The officer believed the suspect was now armed, was in fear the suspect was going to kill him or shoot other officers,” according to a Vallejo Police Department press release. “The officer fired his service weapon and struck the suspect several times. The suspect fell to the sidewalk but tried to get up.”

Other responding officers appeared near the scene of the shooting and after being told that the suspect was armed, another officer used his Taser to subdue the driver.

After handcuffing the wounded driver, the on-scene officers reportedly began treating his injuries until medical personnel arrived and took him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

The driver, a 42-year-old Vallejo resident, died from his injuries at the hospital around 5:34 a.m. His name was being withheld Monday until family members were notified, and an autopsy was scheduled for later that week by the Solano County Coroner’s Office.

With the help of a canine unit, responding officers succeeded in finding and arresting one of the passengers, 18-year-old Anton Barratt. Found hiding in bushes nearby the apartment building, Barratt suffered minor injuries from being subdued by the police dog, as did the officer handling the canine, who was bitten during the melee. Both were taken to local hospitals and treated for minor injuries. Barratt was later booked in Solano County Jail for resisting arrest, according to the VPD press release.

A second passenger was still outstanding as of 9 a.m. Monday morning after being seen running northbound towards Hichborn St. during the pursuit.

The Vallejo Police Department described the officer who shot and killed the suspect as a seven-year veteran on the force. After being interviewed as part of an investigation into the shooting, he was placed on paid administrative leave, per the department’s policy.

Monday's fatal shooting was the second involving a Vallejo police officer in the past week. Late Thursday night, an armed man, whose name had not been released as of Monday, was shot and killed by an officer in the 2000 block of Sonoma Boulevard, police said.

The investigation into the incident was ongoing and anyone with information on this case was asked to contact Detective Mat Mustard or Detective Fabio Rodriguez of the Vallejo Police Department’s Major Case Section at 1-800-488-9383.

San Jose pedestrian, 63, fatally struck while crossing the street

A 63-year-old man was fatally struck by a car Sunday night while crossing a street in East San Jose, police said.

Police said the crash was reported just before 10 p.m. Sunday at Jackson Avenue south of Alum Rock Avenue.

Emergency responders located the pedestrian at the scene and took him to Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

The victim's name was being withheld Monday morning until family members were notified of his death.

Police learned that the man had been crossing Jackson Avenue when a gray, 1991 Toyota Camry struck him.

The car's driver, a 49-year-old man, remained on the scene and was cooperating with the police investigation. Police said he was not believed to be driving drunk.

Both directions of traffic on Jackson Ave. between Alum Rock Ave. and San Antonio St. were closed around midnight as investigators continued to examine the scene of the crash, police said.
